Welcome to Page Unified School District American Indian Education program. Page Unified School District serves all American Indian students in preschool through 12th grade. Our program is funded by four federal grants - Johnson O'Malley (JOM), Title VII, Title VI demonstration, and Impact Aid. We are currently serving over 2,000 students from the surrounding Navajo Reservation communities (Gap/Bodaway, Cedar Ridge, Bittersprings, Coppermine, LeChee, Kaibeto, and Ts'ah bii kin) and the town of Page.
It is the intent of the Page Unified School District that all American Indian children of school age have equal access to all programs, services, and activities offered in the school district.
More information on the JOM, Title VI, Children Incorporated and where to find us:
PUSD Indian Education office is located in Student Support and Family Services / “B” Building, located directly behind the PUSD District/Administration Building.
The Indian Education office oversees the function of three programs; Johnson O’Malley, Title VI, and Children, Incorporated. The staff also assist with the preparation and submission of Title VII/Impact Aid annual Grant Application.
First, Johnson O’Malley (JOM) Program is funded through the Navajo Nation out of Window Rock, AZ. The JOM Program is a supplemental grant. The funds are generated by American Indian student’s hard copy of Certificate of Indian Blood (CIB). Each year the Central JOM office conduct a mandatory Student Count. A staff comes from Window Rock and reviews the hard copy of CIB on file in the Indian Education office. Based on the student count audit, the JOM Grant is allocated to the subcontracted schools on and off the reservation. The JOM program provides supplemental funds to pay for Navajo Language teachers, tutors etc. The JOM program can financially supplement the purchasing of items such as; eyeglasses, cap & gowns, and school supplies, this is referred to as parental cost assistance. The teachers can also submit a JOM Fund Request and attend the IEC Meeting, where their request will be reviewed, discussed and possibly approved for funds to purchase instructional supplies and equipment.
Second, Title VI is funded out of the Office of Indian Education (OIE) out of Washington, DC. The grant application is submitted electronically every year. Most of funds goes to salaries and benefits for PUSD staff, i.e., paraprofessionals, certified reading specialist, Navajo teachers, Home Liaison, and other staff.
Third, Children, Incorporated is a financial sponsorship out of Richmond, Virginia. Students of all ethnicity is eligible. The child needs to meet the main important criteria: low income and desperately need financially support. The parent/guardian will meet with director who will assess the need. The parent/guardian will complete a CI enrollment packet and submit a current student picture. It will be mailed to CI Headquarter for consideration and acceptance.
